Why We Need Replenishing Hydrators During Winter
Winter is truly upon us, so the major emphasis is on building moisture. During the winter months, hydrating is essential as it creates a protective barrier that locks in moisture for our hair and skin. Moisture assists in adjusting to contact with cold temperatures, low humidity, and indoor heating, which can strip away natural oils and moisture and leave the scalp dry and flaky.
My top tips for giving your hair a Moisture Surge for winter.
1.Put a major emphasise on building moisture to prevent frizzy locks and brittle split ends. Treat your hair with intense treatments, focus on hair masks and serums. (I recommend Kerastase as your premium go-to Brand as there are many collections to suit various scalp and hair needs). Don’t forget your night serums and a Pure Silk pillowcase.
2.Add extra protocols to your home care regime. Decalcify or demineralise your hair. It’s not just chlorine or salt water, we find minerals in our drinking water, rainwater and natural springs. These minerals, i.e., copper, calcium, chlorine, build up in the hair shaft and cause dry, brittle and frizzy out of control hair, causing uneven colour results and faded colour pigments. So, it’s very beneficial to remove built up minerals in preparation for healthier locks. An example is “the latest demineralising treatment we have in store, introduced by Kerastase in the PREMIER collection.
The in-salon treatment is a five-step procedure that effectively demineralises and restores the hair to maximum well-nourished, well moisturised condition.
3.Winter 2024 trends emphasize replenishing hydrators such as masks and oils to be at the forefront. Look for masks containing natural oils like argan, coconut, and jojoba, as they penetrate the hair shaft, providing essential moisture and nutrients. Apply a hydrating mask once a week and leave it on for at least 30 minutes. The additional use of a shower cap, to keep natural body heat in, will result in optimal results.
4.Silicon free and sulphate free shampoos, e.g. the Discipline Range, Croma Absolu, and the Premier range by Kerastase are all silicon and sulphate free. Harsh shampoos can strip the scalp of natural oils, exacerbating dryness. Washing your hair less frequently, about 2-3 times a week, can also help maintain natural oils and reduce brittleness.
5.Leave-in conditioners with heat protection, along with serums, are essential for hair care all year round. They provide an extra layer of moisture and protection against the use of blow dryers and other heat styling appliances. Look for products with hydrating ingredients like glycerine and hyaluronic acid. Apply a leave-in conditioner after every wash to keep hair hydrated and lustrously glossy.
